The White House bought Trey Gowdy on as outside counsel to Trump in the fight against impeachment.
This is rather significant because the Russia investigation will presumably be used as evidence against Trump, and Gowdy is one of just a handful of individuals who have actually seen pretty much all of the known documents available that detail how the investigation actually started.
Gowdy has appeared on Fox News many times since leaving Congress and hinted that he found the origins of the investigation quite troubling. This makes Gowdy valuable to the Trump team when deliberating on witnesses to call to not only illustrate Trump's innocence but more importantly perhaps, to lay out the plot that was crafted to take down Trump from the start.
